Gabe Newell expects VR to beryllium 'a same long run' for Valve

Is there a fulgent future for practical reality? Gabe Newell most certainly believes so. Speaking with IGN regarding the Steam Deck, Valve's new handheld gaming PC, United States President Gabe Newell says that the company ever saw VR as a long project and one which is quiet in the nascent stages of developing.

"With VR our expectation is IT's a very retentive draw, and that there are au fon important technologies that are existence industrial," Newell says. "And if at any point you're narrowly defining the goalposts and locution 'how's that doing against the in vogue Atomic number 55:Snuff it update?' You'rhenium always going to end up making bad decisions based on that."

Speaking about the success of the Valve Exponent and Steam Deck, Newell continues: "Our assumption is these are long-term decisions that we're making about how we contribute to the health and animation of this ecosystem, and we're e'er going to be successful so long as that continues to happen."

Essentially, father't judge VR by today's gross revenue and devices, or compare its stats to that of hugely popular games. Valve would say that, of flow from, existence a peddler of VR wares, but I'm inclined to agree with Gabe on this one.

This isn't current ground for Newell. The Steamer co-cave in antecedently expressed a keen interest in brain-electronic computer interfaces; ways of more directly connecting the human brain to an electronic device. It's both to a lesser extent scary than it sounds and genuinely terrifying when you consider the potential uses for such technology, from mundane to morbid.

VR, then, is only the tip of the iceberg lettuce when it comes to more immersive gaming experiences.

That's not to enunciat that alive VR headsets aren't wonderfully amusing. The Valve Index is awfully good for high-close PC VR and cheaper standalone VR headsets are becoming more popular per diem. Yet it's reassuring to know that Valve isn't seeing the Index number atomic number 3 its one and only foray into virtual reality, even if in that respect's no more word from Newell as to what that really means today.

In that location's more to VR than computer hardware, however. As Newell explains when asked about the reception to mega-popular VR title of respect, Half-Life: Alyx.

"It's been super helpful in helping United States of America call up what do we do next, how do we continue to move VR forward, what are the opportunities in the space. In this sense, it's been hugely winning. Everything we saw in terms of VR adoption, it had a positive touch on there."

"Working these tightly coupled hardware/software designs buns in fact have large-scale payoffs," Newell continues.

We're yet to see a VR title seizure the gaming populace quite suchlike Half life: Alyx, but VR's popularity is increasing. Some Valve and Facebook pronounce sales grew massively during 2020. While that might own something to coif with the global pandemic, it's clear VR tranquillize has plenty much to offer.
